Marisa (b. 1994) is a Brooklyn-based artist with roots near South Florida's Everglades. Her artwork explores primitive formalism and abstraction, framed through themes of sexual femininity, depression, and the process of memory reinterpretation. Her practice celebrates the irregular, the crude, and the whimsical, creating a rich tapestry of emotion and thought.
Working primarily with oil pastels on canvas or panel, Marisa layers vibrant colors and textures, often incorporating objects to build a complex, introspective world. Her art grapples with the tension between anxiety and tranquility, aiming to evoke a sense of personal spiritualism and reconnect with the inner child through insinuated shapes and clashing colors.
Marisa views herself as an existential provocateur, crafting pieces that both veil and reveal deeper truths. Her work conjures a dreamlike space for infinite contemplation, inviting viewers to engage with their own inner landscapes and existential reflections.
